Step 3 - Create and Publish a Blog Post

The art of blogging on ThinkWeb with this complete walkthrough on setting up categories, formatting content, optimizing for SEO, and publishing your posts!

IMPORTANT: Set Your Categories First

If you are just starting out with your blog, please create at least one Blog Category before you begin writing your first post.

A blog post must be assigned to a category to be properly organized on your site. Setting these up ahead of time ensures a smooth publishing process once your content is ready.

Getting Started

  • Go to the main page of the Think Web editor.

  • Click the "New" button in the far right-hand corner to open a blank blog post.

Adding Post Details

  • Title: Type in the name of your blog post.

  • Slug: This is the blog’s filename, which is automatically generated from your title. You can change it, but ensure you use hyphens instead of spaces and keep it easy to understand.

  • Author: Type your own name into this field.

  • Categories: Choose a relevant category from your pre-set options. If you need a new category, you can add it later after saving the post.

Publishing and Visibility Settings

  • Status: Leave this as "Draft" while you work, and switch it to "Published" when you are completely ready for it to go live.

  • Published At: Set the date and time you want the post to be published.

  • Visibility: Choose "Public" to allow anyone on the internet to see it. Choose "Private" if you want to hide it from the public and share the link only with specific people, such as checked-in guests.

  • Pinning: Check the "Place post at the top of the blog page" box if you want this post to stay permanently at the top of your blog list, even when newer posts are added.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

  • SEO Title: This is the title search engines like Google will read. Capitalize the first letter of every word, as tests show this can help with search rankings.

  • SEO Description: Write a brief paragraph (no more than 2 sentences) explaining what the post is about for search engines.

Adding a Featured Image

  • The featured image is the photo that appears on your main blog page for your post.

  • For best results, use a photo editing tool like Canva to size your image to exactly 840 by 600 pixels before uploading.

  • Click "Choose File" and select your prepared image.

  • Featured Image Alt Text: Type a 10-to-20-word description of what is happening in the photo for accessibility.

Writing and Formatting Content

  • Paste or type your article text directly into the Post Body area.

  • To add a heading, highlight your desired text, click the formatting options, and choose a heading level, such as Heading 1.

  • While you have many formatting choices (like bolding, fonts, and colors), it is best to keep your formatting consistent so your page does not look messy.

Adding Images Inside the Content

  • To place a photo inside the text, create a line break, then click the "Insert Edit Image" button.

  • Click "Browse Files" and choose your image.

  • Add an Alt Description for the image.

  • You can adjust the image size by changing the "Width" field (for example, to 600).

  • Leave the lock icon closed; this ensures the height adjusts automatically so your picture does not stretch.

  • Wide, slim images are recommended inside blog posts so readers do not have to scroll too much.

Adding Links

  • Internal Links: To link to a page on your own website, highlight your text, click the Link button, and paste just the file name (like /contact). Set this link to open in the "Current Window".

  • External Links: To link to a different website, paste the entire web address. Always set external links to open in a "New Window" so visitors don't lose their place on your blog.

Saving and Managing Categories

  • Once everything is filled out, scroll to the top to double-check your work.

  • Change the status to "Published" and update the time if needed.

  • Scroll to the bottom and click "Save".

  • You may be prompted to add a "Modified Date" before you can save.
