ThinkReservations recommends using E.164 formatting for phone numbers outside the US. Utilizing this internationally-recognized standard phone number format helps ensure the deliverability of messages sent via ThinkMessenger across the globe.
What is E.164 Format?
E.164 is a standardized format for phone numbers used globally. Properly formatted E.164 numbers consist of several components:
A + (plus) sign: This replaces the International Call Prefix like "011" that you would use when making an international call.
International Country Calling code: For example, "1" for the United States, or "44" for the United Kingdom.
Local Area code: The local region's identifier. Remove any leading zeros that are used for local dialing.
Local Phone number: The individual number, again without any leading zeros that might be used in local dialing.
Leading Zeros and E.164
In several countries, local dialing protocols may require the addition of a '0' in front of the subscriber's number. When you're using E.164 formatting with ThinkMessenger, this leading '0' usually needs to be removed.
Example:
Let's consider a UK-based number presented in standard local formatting:
020 7183 8750
In E.164 formatting, this number would be
+442071838750
The leading '0' from the area code has been removed, and the number now starts with a "+" followed by the country code "44" and the remaining digits, which makes it compliant with E.164 standards.
Practical Application with ThinkMessenger
When using ThinkMessenger, ensure that the numbers follow the E.164 formatting. This will improve the reliability and deliverability of your messages.
Check for a Plus Sign: Always start the number with a "+" symbol.
Include Country Code: Append the appropriate country code after the "+" symbol.
Remove Leading Zeros: For both the area code and local number, omit any leading zeros.
Validate the Number: Ensure that the total number of digits (including the country code but not the plus sign) aligns with the typical length of phone numbers for that particular country.
By adhering to these guidelines, you'll be making the best use of ThinkMessenger's capabilities, ensuring that your messages reach their intended recipients without any issues.
